Storage Tanks
Closure of USTs Discovered during Construction
Property in Montgomery County Pennsylvania was historically a gasoline filling station. There were three underground storage tanks (USTs) reported during due diligence activities. A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment was competed, and the former USTs were determined not to be present and there was no significant residual impact to site soils. During redevelopment activities at the site, a fourth UST was discovered in the area of a proposed water service to the building. RT completed the UST closure activities related to the UST. RT determined that this was an unregulated #2 fuel oil tank serving the former building. The #2 fuel oil was removed from the UST and disposed. The UST was cleaned, however could not be removed from the ground due to concerns related foundation stability of the adjoining building. It was decided to cut and remove the steel of the UST at locations which would allow the water service to be installed. Post excavation soil sampling was completed by RT and the closure of the UST was completed. Construction activities continued for the redevelopment of the site.
